Lake Steiner, Muenster's most southern local recreation area
Lake Steiner, also called Lake Hiltrup, is an artificially created lake south of Hiltrup. It is located in the triangle between the railway line Münster-Hamm, the Dortmund-Ems-Canal and the road Hohe Ward. It is accessible via the road Zum Hiltruper See.
The lake is one of several quarry ponds, which originated when the Münsterländer sand and gravel deposits were used for building projects at the begin of the 20th-century. In 1914, the area of the present Lake Steiner was won for the construction of the railway embankments. The created lake was leased and in 1920, a trout farm was created. The lake got its name from the first lessee, the manufacturer Georg Steiner.
Today, Lake Steiner serves as a local recreation area with the nearby public outdoor pool, tennis courts and a beach volleyball facility.
