Sprakel

Sprakel is the most northern and with a population of 2.956 (status 12/2009) at the same time, in relation to the population also the smallest district of Münster in Westphalia. It belongs to the district North, is situated circa 9 km from Münster's city centre and is a typical residential suburb. This district is, all told, very agricultural orientated, which explains the large surface of circa 22,5 km².

The farming community Sprakel is first mentioned as 'Spraclo' or 'Sprakonlo' in an ecclesiastical certificate from the year 1032: The name describes as dense shrubs and points to the copious wooded landscape. Until 1975, belonging to the department St. Mauritz, Sprakel was only in the course of the local government reform incorporated into the town of Münster on the 1st of January 1975.

The social life in Sprakel is characterised by clubs. The Sportverein SC Sprakel 1930 e.V. is with over 700 members one of the most important clubs. Once a year the traditional carnival parade – as one of Münster's first parades – takes place, organised by the Carnival-Interest-Community KIG Sprakel-Sandrup-Coerde. The nearby Riesel fields with the 'Biological Station Rieselfelder Münster' were nominated as an European Reserve for waders and waterfowl. South of the district, in the farming community of Sandrup is Lake Sandruper situated. Thus, the countryside around Sprakel has become an attractive destination for ornithologist and nature lovers.
